At Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), the integration of Clinibee's guideline management software has changed the way clinical staff access and use medical guidelines.
By embedding Clinibee into the hospital desktop systems, they have made clinical resources instantly accessible, greatly enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of bedside care for critically ill patients.
This case study highlights a real-life scenario where Clinibee played a key role in improving patient outcomes, demonstratng its impact on patient safety and communication among clinical staff.
Recently, QEH faced a critical situation involving a severely ill young patient who had overdosed, rapidly deteriorated, and became very unstable.
The patient's blood pressure was challenging to maintain due to the overdose, requiring exceptionally high doses of support to stabilise.
In such urgent scenarios, immediate access to precise guidelines is crucial. Historically, our team would rely on an outdated red bedside folder, filled with policies and guidelines.
Over the years, this folder had become sparse, with missing pages and outdated information, turning it into a precious but unreliable resource.
With Clinibee integrated into the hospital's desktop systems, staff could circumvent the usual delays caused by searching through outdated physical documents.
Instead, a quick search and login on the bedside computer provided all necessary guidelines and the ECMO retrieval checklist promptly.
This instant access to up-to-date protocols was crucial for managing the patient's complex condition effectively.
Upon the patient's arrival, our team immediately utilized Clinibee to access the guidelines for high-dose insulin and methylene blue administration—both rare and unusual prescriptions in such cases. Here’s how Clinibee facilitated our response:
1. Quick Access to Guidelines: The team could rapidly retrieve detailed protocols for administering high-dose insulin and methylene blue, ensuring adherence to best practices.
2. Real-Time Updates: Clinibee's real-time updates meant that all the guidelines were current, reflecting the latest medical standards and adhering to an appropriate governance flow .
3. Stress Reduction for Nurses: The ease of finding guidelines significantly reduced the stress on nurses, allowing them to focus on providing the best possible care without the distraction of searching for information.
The timely administration of the correct treatments and adherence to protocols, such as frequent blood sugar and blood gas tests, maintaining potassium levels, and meticulous patient monitoring, were critical in stabilising the patient. As a result, the ECMO team could retrieve the patient safely and efficiently, highlighting the life-saving impact of having immediate access to comprehensive guidelines through Clinibee.
"Normally, the team would have searched for the old, tired-looking red bedside folder that used to contain all the policies and guidelines but had become sparse over the years, with pages removed or lost, making it a precious resource for nurses. We did not face this problem! A quick search on Clinibee and login at the bedside computer provided all the guidelines and the template for the ECMO retrieval checklist in no time."
